Britannia cruise liner floated away like a paper boat when it came loose. A boardwalk collapsed and sank as well.

During a severe summer storm off the coast of Mallorca, Spain, a P&O cruise liner collided with a cargo ship. More than 1000 passengers were onboard the cruise ship.

According to P&O, a few people on board have been injured, and medical staff are tending to them. The ship will remain in Palma de Mallorca so that its technical condition may be evaluated.

There is “no structural compromise,” as the skipper had already assured passengers.

Images and videos captured by passengers on board the vessel show the emergency response crews working to clean up the wreckage and the ship at sea.

A spokesperson stated, “The local fire service and crew were carrying out an emergency drill” when the “unexpected drama” occurred.

A violent rain and wind storm pushed us away from our dockside, he added, at around 11:00 a.m., destroying tethering lines, and water hoses, and forcing the walkway to tumble into the sea.

Another passenger, described the situation on board as “madness” because the sunbeds “were starting to flip. He was unable to see anything beyond the ship’s windows due to the torrential downpour.

It sailed away like a paper boat, he said of the ship after it had broken free of its moorings. No more assistance was possible from the personnel.

The captain kept passengers and crew informed every 10–15 minutes, calming down the situation.

Extreme weather has reached the islands, bringing heavy downpours and winds of up to 120 km/h (75 mph). Palma de Mallorca Airport had to cancel more than 20 flights.

Extreme weather warnings have been extended until Monday for the islands in the Mediterranean. There was no structural damage, except for a small one on deck 5.

A P&O Cruises spokeswoman said that they are aware of an incident involving Britannia on Sunday morning and are working to assess the situation.

There was “no problem on the ship other than a few scrapes and bumps to one or more lifeboats.

Tourists on land excursions will be able to get back on the ship again.

While technical specialists evaluate the ship, P&O promises passengers a full slate of onboard activities and entertainment.

The ship left for Southampton and should be arriving there on September 1.

The Queen Mary 2 had a similar issue on August 4 owing to heavy weather, when it broke free from her bow mooring line and drifted off the pier at Southampton.

Miss Universe R’Bonney Gabriel, along with fellow titleholders Miss Universe Aruba 2022 Kiara Arends and Miss Universe El Salvador 2022 Alejandra Guajardo Sada, celebrated Women’s Equality Day today by speaking with Carnival Vista Captain Claudio Bozzo and female deck and engine officers about the importance of women’s empowerment on the bridge of Carnival Vista in Galveston.

Women’s Equality Day celebrates and honors the women’s suffrage movement and acknowledges the hurdles that women have had to overcome in their stride towards equality and progress. Gabriel, a Houston native, is the first Filipino-American to win Miss Universe and Miss USA, and much of her platform is about embracing one’s culture. Her mission is to inspire women and young girls to achieve their goals while owning who they are.

“The Miss Universe Organization advocates for a future forged by women,” said Gabriel. “It’s gratifying to meet with the women of Carnival Vista today, and see that they are also breaking barriers and achieving success in non-traditional roles.”

“At Carnival, we have been focused on our diversity, equity and inclusion efforts for several years,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “We’ve made progress and our Deck and Engine women officers have increased significantly, along with an increase in women leaders across other departments. I’m so pleased that R’Bonney and her fellow titleholders could be with us on Women’s Equality Day as they represent a sisterhood that is committed to uplifting each other.”

This week, Gabriel, Arends and Guajardo will take part in several events while sailing aboard Carnival Vista, including the Groove for St. Jude dance party, an onboard fundraiser for longtime Carnival partner, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The three women will also enjoy spectacular shore excursions in Mahogany Bay, Isla Roatan, Belize City, Belize and Cozumel, Mexico, and expect to be greeted by Miss Universe Belize.

Gabriel attended the University of North Texas. She is an eco-friendly clothing designer who has made it her mission to create more sustainable fashion.

Royal Caribbean International and Inter Miami CF have joined forces in an unprecedented, multiyear partnership that will combine the passion and commitment of the respective powerhouses in vacations and sports.

Royal Caribbean will become the Club’s Main Partner and Official Vacation Partner. The world’s largest cruise line and Inter Miami kicked off the first phase of their partnership in a bold way by officially welcoming global fútbol icons and their families to Miami in July. The highly anticipated unveiling event, La Presentación, marked the start of a new era, where the “Freedom to Dream” took center stage in a sold-out DRV PNK Stadium.

“Royal Caribbean started in Miami more than 50 years ago, and we have always had heart and passion for our community,” said Jason Liberty, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean Group. “It’s been exciting to see Inter Miami’s success, including their recent Leagues Cup title, energize South Florida. As the Club’s Main Partner, we are thrilled to build on that momentum together and deliver memorable moments to fans around the world.”

“We are proud to partner with Royal Caribbean, an iconic Miami brand,” said Inter Miami CF Managing Owner Jorge Mas. “As a global leader in the cruise industry, Royal Caribbean shares Inter Miami’s innovative drive. Together, we will set the standard for the future of sports partnerships.”

Fans will see the partners unite on and off the field, through stadium LED, in-game content, fan zone activations, the Club’s digital and social platforms, and more starting with the next home game at DRV PNK Stadium. In addition, the two hometown favorites’ shared commitment to the community they call home will come to life across local initiatives in South Florida, building on Royal Caribbean’s decades-long track record of celebrating and contributing to the destinations its ships visit and Inter Miami’s commitment to harnessing the power of fútbol to do good since the Club’s inception.

“We always look for the opportunities that will provide us with an authentic partnership, and this one is a perfect fit,” said Inter Miami CF Chief Business Officer, Xavier Asensi. “This partnership makes total sense for all of us: two local brands with global audiences and huge ambitions.”

“Royal Caribbean and Inter Miami have won the hearts and minds of fans from around the world,” said Kara Wallace, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Royal Caribbean International. “Together as partners, the possibilities to reach more dreamers and adventurers are exponential from ship to pitch, especially as we look forward to the arrival of the new Icon of the Seas to Miami.”

The partnership comes on the heels of the countdown to the start of a new era of vacations. As Miami welcomes one icon, its next is set to make its debut in January 2024 – Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas. As the first-of-its-kind combination of every vacation, from the resort getaway to the beach escape and the theme park adventure, the cruise line’s best-selling ship welcomes every type of family and adventurer. Everyone can make memories together and set out on their own adventures without compromise across record-breaking thrills, relaxing ways to chill, a neighborhood designed for young families, more than 40 ways to dine, drink and be entertained; and more.

Public and private sector officials from Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina and Chile gathered to discuss cruise tourism opportunities and challenges at the IX Encuentro Regional de Cruceros y Turismo Náutico Fluvial.

New destinations, services for (small boat) nautical tourism, river cruise development, regional port models and investments were among the topics at the Aug. 17-18 event held in Montevideo.

10% passenger increase forecast

For Uruguay’s upcoming six-month cruise season set to begin Oct. 24 and end April 29, a 10% increase in calls and a corresponding rise in passenger numbers is projected over the 2022/23 season, Tourism Minister Tabaré Viera said.

Last season marked an eight-year high, with 187 calls carrying 320,000 passengers, generating $16.3m in revenues for the country.

Regional unity

Viera stressed the importance of regional unity and cooperation and highlighted the convention, which has been held annually since 2013 in Uruguay, as a valuable exchange between the public and private actors.

He also encouraged the development of nautical tourism along the coast and river cruising, which could go beyond the austral summer season, and said various ideas and proposals by government and private entities are under consideration.

José Luis Falero, minister of transport and public works, pointed to government investments in infrastructure at the ports of Montevideo and Colonia del Sacramento.

He said actions are planned so Colonia can receive cruise ships, and work is being done at the Port of Punta del Este to improve its facilities.

For his part, Juan Curbelo, president of the National Ports Association, highlighted the presence of representatives from ports across the region, which facilitated an exchange of ideas to promote cruising and the region’s position as a destination.

Chile’s participation

Speaking on the ‘Vision of Development of the Southern Cone’ panel, Chile’s Southern Cone Ports Corp. (Conosur) President Enrique Runín talked about actions his association is undertaking to strengthen cruise tourism in Chile and the region.

As recently reported here, Chile is looking to ease cabotage restrictions for cruise ships of all sizes; its current law bars ships carrying fewer than 400 passengers from operating coastwise.

Removing this restriction would help the international expedition cruise sector.

The Port of Valparaíso, a Conosur member, was represented by its head of competitiveness and sustainability, Pedro Torrejón, who also spoke at the event.

During the 2022/23 season, Chile hosted 250,465 cruise passengers on 394 calls at 26 ports and destinations. Runin projected a 10% increase in passenger numbers during the upcoming season.

Like the Uruguayans, the Conosur chief underscored the value of trans-national cooperation.

Cruise line attendees

Cruise line participants included Dario Rustico, general manager, Central and South America for Costa Cruises; Pablo Laudonia, Argentina-based sales manager, MSC Cruises; and CLIA Brazil President Marco Ferraz.

Municipal directors of tourism and port directors also attended.

Cruise ships deliver a treasured product to the tourism zones of Georgian Bay, fetching tourists to shop nearby, in addition to prominence and a limelight on the international platform.

The Pearl Mist is a luxury vessel like this, capable to carry 210 commuters and 70 crew fellows all through
the warmer periods on trips all over the Great Lakes.

Even though its cabins are big, it ranges on the slighter proportions of cruise ships at approximately 100
meters in measurement, letting it into areas that large cruise ships do not have the right of entry.

Non-waste leftover products from cruise ships can be labeled as either dirt or grey water.

In 2019, ineffectively treated contamination from cruise ships was discarded into the Pacific Ocean of
Canada. It is around 31 billion litres, said Reuters.

Transport Canada declared deliberate conservational methods for cruise ships in April this year, prior
to making them compulsory in late June.

Implementation and a $250,000 maximum fine would be enforced on non-obedient ships.

Georgian Bay is linked to the east side of Lake Huron and is approximately a third of its magnitude. Its main entrance and exit point is in the opening north of Tobermory, even though route to the North Channel is also visited.

According to a Saudi Press Agency report, Cruise Saudi has received nominations for three significant cruise industry awards programs.

The company was named a finalist for “Middle East’s Best Cruise Destination” by the World Cruise Awards, “Destination of the Year” by the Seatrade Cruise Awards, and “Best Excursion” by the Wave Awards.

The World Cruise Awards have recognized the firm for its achievements in growing the country’s cruise industry, improving ports along the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf coasts, and offering shore excursions that showcase Saudi Arabia’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, culture, and hospitality.

The “The Lives of Saudi Women” cruise trip is nominated for a Wave Award. According to the description of the trip, which is solely available to female travelers, it offers a greater knowledge of the role of women in the Kingdom by giving true insights into their history and present lives.

One of the 18 historical women’s shelters in the neighborhood, which was recently converted by Saudi entrepreneur Haleel Alabassi into an Arabic language school, is one of the stops on the trip that takes visitors to Jeddah’s Historic District, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

“We’re delighted to be nominated for awards at the World Cruise Awards, Seatrade Cruise Awards and Wave Awards,” said Cruise Saudi CEO Lars Clasen.

“The categories we have been nominated for are especially important to us, as they recognize the hard work our team and our partners have put in to create exceptional experiences for our passengers and to make a positive contribution to the wider global cruising industry.”

On October 15, there will be a gala event at Atlantis the Royal hotel in Dubai where the winners of the World Cruise Awards will be announced. The Wave Awards will be given out on November 13 at the Dorchester Hotel in London, while the Seatrade Cruise Awards will be given out on September 6 during the Seatrade Europe exposition in Hamburg, Germany.
